Earthtone Creations was built on mentorship, not marketing. Here's the story behind the company.
In 1976, what would become Earthtone Creations wasn't a company yet. It was an apprenticeship under Tim Comer, a respected Fayetteville nurseryman who served as a mentor and grandfather figure to the people he trained.
The work was real from day one: large-scale residential developments and apartment communities across Fayetteville. That environment taught things a classroom can't. How to read a property's drainage. What plants hold up in North Carolina's clay soil. How to plan five years out instead of just getting through the season.
"Earthtone Creations is not backed by a bank. It is backed by experience, mentorship, and fifty years of hard-earned work."
Owner James Heustess carries that same foundation into every project today. Same standards, same work ethic, same respect for each property we touch.
James Heustess runs Earthtone Creations the way Tim Comer taught him: hands on, straight with clients, and focused on what the property actually needs over the long term. He has worked across Moore County and Cumberland County for decades. That experience shapes how every job gets planned before the first crew member shows up.
The modernized stripe in our logo carries a specific meaning. It pays tribute to James's late grandfather, Jim Heustess, who owned American Waste Systems. It represents the idea that this company is built on a lineage of real work, not capital or marketing. You take a foundation that was earned, carry it forward, and don't compromise what made it worth carrying.
Earthtone Creations was not funded by investors, built from a franchise manual, or grown through advertising spend. It was built from the ground up through field work, mentorship, and a standard that doesn't get relaxed when it's inconvenient. That's not a talking point. It shows up in every estimate, every crew visit, and every finished property.
Work With Us
Earthtone Creations is built on consistent crews. You know who's coming because it's always the same people.
Over 50 years in the field. James personally oversees every estimate and holds the standard on every job.
Ryan coordinates scheduling, crew logistics, and client communication across all active properties.
Most landscape companies treat clients as recurring invoices. We build long-term relationships. Where others cut corners to hit a schedule, we follow the same process every time, because our reputation is on every property we touch.
We don't rotate through crews. The same people show up to your property visit after visit, so they know the space, and you know who to call.
Edging, bed lines, cleanup: all of it gets done before we leave. We don't consider a job done until the property looks the way we'd want ours to look.
Fifty years of field work means we don't waste your time or ours. We know what a job requires before we start, and we plan accordingly.
If something changes, we tell you. If we see a problem you should know about, we flag it. No surprises after the invoice.
Routine maintenance is the core of what we do, and we do it consistently. But the projects that stick with us are the ones that take real thought: a front yard that's been neglected for years, a blank slate after new construction, a property going on the market that needs to show well in two weeks.
We've handled all of it: custom landscape design, floral installations, sod and plant work, seasonal color programs, and complete property overhauls. The scope doesn't change the standard. A small cleanup job gets the same attention as a full redesign, because both end up in front of people who will judge our work by what they see.
We take real pride in projects that require vision. The kind that turn an outdated or overlooked space into something that actually commands attention.

Our reputation wasn't bought. It was built one project at a time over 50 years.
We invest in every relationship: with clients, with properties, and with each other.
We plan and execute with your property's future value in mind, not just today's result.
A finished project isn't done until it surpasses expectations. That's not a goal, it's a baseline.
We're proud to serve the Moore County communities we've called home for generations.
